Zigbee sensors are the easiest way to make your home aware of what is happening: motion in a hallway, a door left open, water under the sink, or a slow temperature change. Before You Start
Make sure your Zigbee gateway is already added to the Tuya Smart app and online. If it is not, add it first as a WiFi device, then keep your phone near the gateway while pairing sensors. Most sensors should be within a few meters of the gateway during the initial pairing, even if they will be installed farther away later.
General Pairing Steps for Any Zigbee Sensor
The pairing process is almost identical for every sensor type:
- Open the Tuya Smart app and tap + to add a device.
- Choose the matching sensor category, such as Motion Sensor or Door Sensor.
- The app asks you to put the sensor into pairing mode. For most Tuya sensors this means pressing and holding the reset button until the LED flashes quickly.
- Wait for the app to find the sensor through the gateway and add it to your home.
- Give the sensor a clear name, for example Hallway Motion or Front Door Sensor.
Pairing Common Sensor Types
PIR Motion Sensors
PIR motion sensors detect heat movement. Hold the reset button for about five seconds until the LED blinks, then complete the pairing in the app. Install them in corners for the widest detection angle and away from direct sunlight or heaters.
Door and Window Sensors
These sensors have two parts: the main unit and a magnetic piece. Press and hold the button on the main unit until it blinks, pair it in the app, then attach one piece to the door and the other to the frame. When the gap opens, the sensor triggers instantly.
Temperature and Humidity Sensors
Temperature and humidity sensors help you automate heating, fans, and dehumidifiers. Pair them near the gateway first, then move them to the room you want to monitor. Keep them away from direct sunlight, windows, and vents for accurate readings.
Water Leak Sensors
Water leak sensors are critical protection under sinks, washing machines, and water heaters. Pair them while dry, then place the probe where a leak would first appear. When water bridges the contacts, the app alerts you immediately.
Smoke and Gas Detectors
Smoke and gas detectors connect through the gateway so you can receive alerts anywhere. Follow the manufacturer reset instructions to enter pairing mode, confirm the siren test in the app, and mount them according to the manual.
Troubleshooting Sensor Pairing
- Move the sensor closer to the gateway and try again.
- Make sure the sensor battery is fresh and the LED is actually blinking.
- If the sensor was paired before, reset it to clear the old network.
- Restart the gateway by unplugging it for ten seconds, then retry.
What to Do After Pairing
Once paired, use the sensors in automations: turn on lights when motion is detected, send a notification when a door opens, or sound an alarm when water is found. If you are also adding smart switches, they will join the same mesh and improve the range of all your battery sensors.
