What Is a Zigbee Gateway?
A Zigbee gateway is a hub that sits between your Zigbee devices and your WiFi router. It translates the Zigbee radio protocol used by sensors and switches into the internet protocol your phone and the Tuya Smart app can understand. Without a gateway, Zigbee devices have no way to reach your network, the cloud, or your smartphone.
Zigbee vs WiFi: Why Zigbee Needs a Hub
WiFi devices connect directly to your router, which makes setup simple but also means every device competes for bandwidth and power. Zigbee devices use a different radio technology that is optimized for low power and large device counts. The trade-off is that they cannot talk to your router directly; they form a local mesh network and use the gateway as the single point of entry.

How the Tuya Zigbee Ecosystem Works
In a Tuya setup, the gateway is added to the Tuya Smart app over WiFi. Once online, it becomes the coordinator of a Zigbee mesh. Battery-powered sensors like PIR motion detectors, door and window sensors, and water leak alarms connect to the gateway using very little power. Mains-powered devices such as smart switches and smart plugs join the mesh and help relay messages, extending range to distant rooms.
What to Look for in a Tuya Zigbee Gateway
When choosing a gateway, check these points:
- Zigbee 3.0 support: the latest standard works with the widest range of Tuya devices.
- App integration: it must pair with the Tuya Smart or Smart Life app.
- Device capacity: most gateways support dozens of sub-devices, which is plenty for a normal home.
- Stable WiFi connection: place the gateway near your router with a reliable 2.4GHz signal.
