The Tuya Smart app is the control center for millions of smart home devices around the world. Yet most users only scratch the surface, using it to turn devices on and off. Once you understand scenes, automations, schedules, and voice control, the same app can run your entire home by itself.
Understanding the App Structure
When you open Tuya Smart, the main tabs are Home, Smart, and Profile. The Home tab shows your devices and rooms, the Smart tab is where automations and scenes live, and Profile handles accounts, sharing, and home management.
Scenes vs Automations
Tap-to-run scenes are shortcuts that trigger a set of actions with one tap. For example, a Movie Mode scene can dim the lights, close the curtains, and turn on the TV. Automations run automatically when a condition is met, such as a motion sensor detecting movement or the time reaching sunset.
To create either one, open the Smart tab, tap +, and choose Add Scene or Add Automation. Then select the trigger and the actions you want.
Powerful Automation Triggers
Tuya automations are not limited to device states. You can trigger actions based on:
- Time: sunrise, sunset, or a fixed schedule.
- Weather: outdoor temperature, humidity, or weather conditions.
- Device state: motion detected, door opened, water leak, or temperature change.
- Location: when you arrive at or leave a geofenced area.
Schedules for Daily Routines
Schedules make your home behave consistently. Use them to wake you up with gradually brighter lights, keep the heating at a comfortable level in the morning, and switch everything off at night. Schedules can also include an away mode that simulates occupancy while you travel, which is both convenient and a security feature.
Voice Control Setup
To control Tuya devices by voice:
- Open the Alexa app and enable the Tuya Smart skill, or open Google Home and link Tuya Smart under Works with Google.
- Sign in with the same account you use in the Tuya Smart app.
- Wait for your devices to sync, then say commands like Alexa, turn on the living room lights or Hey Google, set the thermostat to 22 degrees.
Sharing and Multi-User Control
Every member of the household should be able to control the home. In Profile > Home Management, tap Share Home and invite family members by email or phone number. They can then use their own Tuya Smart accounts to control shared devices.
